IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE - REG PASSPORT APPLICATIONS AT EMBASSY

Phasing out of non Machine Readable Passports from 25th November 2015. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has set a deadline of 24th November 2015 for globally phasing out all non-machine Readable Passports (MRPs).  From 25-11-2015 onwards, foreign Governments may deny visa or entry to any person travelling with a non-MRP passport.

All handwritten passports with pasted photos earlier issued by Government of India are considered non-MRP passports. All 20-year validity passports will also fall in this category. The Government started issuing MRP passports since 2001.  All new Indian passports are ICAO-compliant MRP passports.

In the case of Indian nationals applying from Colombia and Ecuador, the passports will be printed and issued from India. The applications for such passports are required to be submitted to the Embassy of India, Bogotá well before the date of expiry (Normally it is suggested to apply 6 months in advance before the exipiry of the Passport) of the existing passports for processing by this Embassy and issue of passports by the concerned office of the Government of India in New Delhi.  Such passports will be delivered to the applicant concerned on receipt from India.  It takes about 2-4 weeks for the issue of a new passport after submitting complete documents at Embassy.

In emergency cases, the Embassy would be able to issue a hand-written Emergency Certificate (EC) for immediate travel to India only and the individual would be required to apply for a Machine Readable Passport immediately on arrival in India.  Such EC is only for traveling to India and not for other countries and it will not be extendable.  The applicant has to apply for a Machine Readable Passport after reaching India.
