PASSPORT SERVICES: OVERVIEW

General Passport Information

Indian passport services for Indian nationals residing in Colombia and Ecuador are rendered by the Embassy of India, Bogotá. Applicants are advised to carefully read the instructions below before applying for passport or related consular services.

Important Notice: Migration to New Passport Seva Portal (GPSP V 2.0)

From 1 September 2025, passport and PCC applications are required to be submitted through the new Global Passport Seva Project (GPSP) Version 2.0 Portal. Applicants are also required to upload an ICAO-compliant photograph, scanned signature and required supporting documents.

Before You Apply Please Note

(a)     Indian passport is a valuable document and should be kept in safe custody at all times.

(b)     Loss or theft of passport should immediately be reported to the local police authorities and to the Embassy of India, Bogotá.

(c)     Furnishing false information or suppressing material facts in passport applications is an offence under the Passports Act, 1967.

(d)     Passport services may be denied in cases involving false information, damaged passports, misuse of passport or adverse police verification.

(e)     Applicants are advised to apply for renewal of passport at least 6 months before expiry.

(f)      Passports for applicants residing in Colombia and Ecuador are printed in India and processing may therefore take additional time.

(g)     All new Indian passports are Machine Readable Passports (MRP) compliant with ICAO standards.

(h)     Handwritten passports and non-machine readable passports are no longer valid for international travel in many countries.

(i)      Indian nationals acquiring foreign nationality must surrender their Indian passport immediately after acquisition of foreign citizenship.

(j)      Renunciation of Indian citizenship applications are required to be submitted online through: https://indiancitizenshiponline.nic.in  

Passport Application Process

Step 1 – Complete Online Application

Applicants are required to complete the online application form through GPSP Version 2.0 Portal: https://mportal.passportindia.gov.in/mission/  

Upload required documents including an ICAO-compliant photograph (mandatory) and a scanned copy of your signature. Please Click here  for ICAO guidelines.

Step 2 – Prepare Required Documents

Documents generally required include (i) Existing passport (original), (ii) Copy of passport first and last pages, (iii) Valid visa/residence proof, (iv) Proof of address, (v) Supporting documents for specific services (if applicable)

Additional documents may be required depending on the category of application.

Step 3 – Pay Applicable Fees

Applicants are advised to verify the latest applicable fees before submission.

Step 4 – Submit Application

  • (a) Applications need to be submitted at the Embassy during Consular timings.

Receipt of Applications: Monday to Friday (10:00 AM -12:00 Noon)

Collection of Documents: Monday to Friday(3:00 PM - 4:00 PM)

  • (b) Passport/PCC applications along with supporting documents may also presently be submitted through DHL/courier service. However, the Embassy may require personal appearance of applicants, wherever necessary.

  • (c) Applicants using courier services are advised to ensure that complete documentation, fee payment proof and correct contact details are enclosed with the application.

  • (d) To ensure smooth delivery of documents, applicants from Colombia and Ecuador are advised to include their ZIP Code in the postal address while applying for Passport and consular services. ZIP Codes may be found from the following websites:

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)-Passport Services

  1. Which Indian Mission presently handles passport and consular services for applicants residing in Ecuador?

Embassy of India, Quito has been functional since September 2025. However, passport, PCC and other consular services for applicants residing in Ecuador are presently being handled by Embassy of India, Bogotá until further notice.

Applicants residing in Ecuador may therefore continue to submit passport and related consular applications to Embassy of India, Bogotá.

For local coordination or general enquiries in Ecuador, applicants may also contact Embassy of India, Quito at: cons.quito@mea.gov.in  and hoc.quito@mea.gov.in .

Q. When should I renew my passport?

Applicants are advised to apply for renewal at least six months before expiry of passport.

  1. What is the validity of an Indian passport?

Ordinary passports are generally valid for 10 years for adults. Passports for minors are normally issued for 5 years or until attaining 18 years of age, whichever is earlier.

Q. What should I do if my passport is lost or stolen?

Loss of passport should immediately be reported to local police authorities and to the Embassy. Applicants may thereafter apply for re-issue of passport or Emergency Certificate, as applicable.

Q. What is an Emergency Certificate (EC)?

Emergency Certificate is a one-way travel document issued to Indian nationals for emergency return travel to India in cases such as loss/theft of passport or urgent humanitarian situations.

Q. Can I travel if my passport has less than six months validity?

Many countries require minimum six months passport validity for international travel. Applicants are advised to renew passport well in advance.

Q. Can I apply for passport renewal if all pages are exhausted?

Yes. Applicants should apply for re-issue of passport under “Exhaustion of Pages” category. Additional pages are not added to existing passports and instead new passport is re-issued.

Q. Can I retain Indian passport after acquiring foreign nationality?

No. Indian citizenship law does not permit dual citizenship. Indian passport must be surrendered immediately after acquisition of foreign nationality.

Q. Is personal appearance mandatory?

The Embassy may require personal appearance of applicants, wherever necessary.

Q. What documents are required for minors?

Minor passport applications generally require Consent/signatures of both parents, Copies of parents’ passports, Birth certificate, Supporting residence documents.

Additional documents may be required in specific cases.

Q. What should I do if there is damage to my passport?

Damaged passports should be immediately replaced through re-issue of passport application.

  1. Can I change name/address/date of birth in passport?

Yes. Applicants may apply for re-issue of passport along with supporting documentary evidence for change in personal particulars.

Q. How long does passport processing take?

Processing time may vary depending on the category of application, completeness of documentation and police verification requirements. Applicants are advised to apply well in advance. In general, passport processing may take approximately 3-4 weeks.

  1. Can I apply for PCC together with passport application?

PCC and Passport applications are separate services and may require separate applications/documents depending upon the purpose.
